Makepung means ‘chase’. Makepung Buffalo Races is one of the unique traditions stemming from the agrarian life of the island, and is a widely enjoyed event in the regency of Jembrana, West Bali. Hundreds of pairs of buffaloes are teamed up together with their jockeys riding the traditional wooden ploughs. The large events are inspired from a traditional pastime and preserves the unique traditions of this part of the island. The competitions also provide positive impact on agriculture and farming and has partly prevented the shift of land for farming use. It has also encouraged the people to improve the quality of animal husbandry, raising winning buffaloes for the yearly events.

If the races are not happening at the time of your visit, a more intimate look can be had by watching the practicing. This offers a more exclusive experience as there are not huge crowds.
