The Buginese people are an ethnic group from Suawesi. A community that is dedicated to the seas. They are born on water, live on water and are buried in their waters. Life is a difficult one, moving with the winds and creating homes upon coral rocks with wooden gangways linking homes.

Most Buginese people live in distinctive stilted houses, sometimes three meters or more off the ground. The folklore of this ethnic group has taken on a life of its own. Considered the original pirates, their wooden Pinsi boats are still built today and ply the islands. The old saying: ” Be careful or the Boogey man will get you.” is thought to have been referring to the Bugis. Long before the colonialists entered their waters, the Buginese built elegant, ocean-going schooners and were intrepid sailors ,explorers and traders.
